A difference from their last effort yet undeniably a-ha. This time, the Norse purveyors of quality pop have opted for a variety of producers, ranging from Stephen Hague to Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. The album begins with a lush ballad -- which is typical a-ha, pastoral with support orchestration -- almost like a modern day Moody Blues. "You Wanted More" also follows this trait, only darker with spiky electronics. "Afternoon High" sketches out '70s pastel glory similar to what Tears for Fears were getting at with parts of the Seeds of Love album. There are shades of Minor Earth Major Sky in that they keep the sugary neigh pleasant ballads vein to full emotional effect on "Turn the Lights Down," "Time and Again," and like MEMS's Garbage homage "Sun Never Shone." "Cannot Hide" opts for a Jennifer Paige "Crush" vibe with George Harrison-style guitar, while "Forever Not Yours"' pleasant dramatism echoes Darren Hayes' recent Insatiable. ~ Kelvin Hayes

世界で最も成功したバンドの一つであり、多くの熱狂的なファンを抱えるa-ha。その彼らのミレニアム・カムバック作とも呼べる2作品が、アルバムの最新リマスター音源にボーナス・トラック、未発表デモ音源にアウト・テイク、ライヴ音源などを加えたデラックス・エディションでリリースとなる。本作『ライフラインズ【デラックス・エディション】』には、オリジナル・アルバムの最新リマスター音源にボーナス・ディスクを追加したCD1と、19曲の初期ヴァージョン、デモ音源、アルバムに最終的に収録されなかった楽曲など全19曲からなるCD2が収録されている。またブックレットには音楽ジャーナリスト、キーロン・タイラーによる新規ライナー・ノーツがフィーチャーされている。

1993年発表の5作目アルバム『MEMORIAL BEACH』のリリース後、a-haは7年間に亘る活動休止期間に入った。その間メンバーである、モートン・ハルケット、ポール・ワークター、マグスの3人はそれぞれ自分たちの活動に専念していたが、1998年、オスロのノーベル平和賞コンサートに招待され、a-haとして2曲を演奏した。そのライヴを切っ掛けに突然のカムバックを果たした彼らは、新たなる世紀の始まりに合わせるかのように2000年、ヨーロッパ各国でナンバー1を獲得した傑作アルバム『遥かなる空と大地(原題:Major Earth | Minor Sky)』をリリースする。そのまま彼らは、ワールド・ツアーで大きな喝采を浴び、2002年『ライフラインズ』を発表。見事シーンに復活を果たしたのであった。

ミレニアム・カムバック作の第2作であるアルバム『ライフラインズ』において彼らは、自分たちがこれまで、いやそれ以上に良好な状態にあることを証明した。時代を経るごとにメンバーそれぞれの活動も成長し、広がっていった:マグスは音楽だけでなく、ヴィジュアル・アーツ(視覚芸術)の分野でも活躍するようになり、ポールのバンド、サヴォイは4作目のアルバム『リーズンズ・トゥ・ステイ・インドアーズ』(2001年作品)をリリースし、そしてモートンはソロ・アーティストとしてのキャリアを築きあげただけでなく、ソングライターとしても知られる存在となっていた。「モートンが、一緒にソングライティングをしようと働きかけてきたんだ」そう明かすのはマグス。「そこから新たな形のパートナーシップが始まった」(1/2)

『ライフラインズ』で各メンバーはそれぞれ個人で作った楽曲を提供し、結果的にStephen Hagueに、Clive Langer、Alan WinstanleyやMartin Landquistなどを含む6人のプロデューサーが参加している。またいくつかの楽曲で、アネリ・ドレッカーがその美声を提供している。彼らにとって最もヴァラエティに富んだ、幅広く、多彩なアルバムとなった『ライフラインズ』は、世界的に高く評価され、ドイツでナンバー1に輝いた。

今回リリースされるデラックス・エディションのCD2 を見れば、a-haがアルバム1枚に収まり切らないほどの楽曲を当時用意していたことが分かるだろう。例えば「ザ・ブレイカーズ」、「ソール・サヴァイヴァー」、「トゥ・ショウ・イット・イズ・トゥ・ブロウ・イット」は最終的にアルバムに収録されなかった楽曲である。その中でも「ザ・ブレイカーズ」は、後にポールが自身のバンド、サヴォイで新たにレコーディングしている。また彼らは、スタジオ・ワークの面でも様々な試みを行ったり、ヴァリエーションを持たせている。レコーディングとミクシングは、ロンドンとニューヨーク、そしてオスロで行われた。その内のいくつかが、デモ・ヴァージョンやアーリー・ミックス・ヴァージョンとしてここに収録されており、例えば「ライフランズ」や「ドラゴンフライ」などのように、アイディアがヒットに形作られていく様子をファンに明らかにしている。かなりラフな状態の「フォーエヴァー・ノット・ユアーズ」のデモ・ヴァージョンを聞けば、マグス=モートンによる新たなパートナーシップが、ヒットソングを生み出す良い土壌になったことがはっきりと見て取れる。(2/2)
