Hey, I'm Just Like You

カナダのちょっとエッジーな双子インディー・ポップ・デュオ、TEGAN AND SARA(ティーガン&サラ)。10代の時にニール・ヤングのヴェイパー・レコーズと契約した彼女たちも、今やキャリア20年を迎えた若きベテラン・アーティストに。ソングライターであり、マルチ・インストゥルメンタリストである二人が2016年の『LOVE YOU TO DEATH』以来約3年振りとなるニュー・アルバムをリリースする。

通算9作目のスタジオ・アルバムとなる『HEY, I'M JUST LIKE YOU』。このアルバムで彼女たちは、自分たちの原点に戻ってみたという。二人は初の回顧録『HIGH SCHOOL』の出版を9月に控えているが、その回顧録が最新アルバムのインスピレーションにもなっているという。 「回顧録に取り掛かっている時、20年以上も聴いていなかったカセット・テープを2本発掘したの」そう思い返すのはティーガンだ。「カセットの中には、私たちが15歳から17歳の間に作った楽曲が山ほどはいっていた・・・それを見つけた途端、ここに入っている楽曲が私達の高校時代を語る上で必要不可欠なものだと思いだしたのね」

彼女たちが語るように、『HEY, I'M JUST LIKE YOU』は、ティーガン&サラが、自分たちのロックとパンクのルーツに戻り、そこに彼女たちの持ち味であるポップなプロダクションというアクセントを利かせたアルバムである。今年の4月と5月にカナダのバンクーバーでレコーディングされた本作は、10代にして彼女たちが秘めていたソングライティングの才能が見え隠れしている原石に、この20年間で二人が培ってきたレコーディング経験を加え、これまで日の目を見ることがなかった"失われた"超初期の楽曲を新たな形で蘇らせている。アルバムの中には、初恋の喜びと悲しみ、初めての失恋や、陶酔した別れ、サイケデリックな友情讃歌など反抗的で芝居がかった、初々しい青さが息づく楽曲が溢れているのだ。 「歌詞と曲構成を僅かに修正しただけで、曲のエッセンスは出来るだけ元のままに保とうとしたの」アルバムのレコーディングについて、サラはそう語っている。

『HEY, I'M JUST LIKE YOU』は、双子の姉妹ががっつりと組んだコラボレーション作品と呼べるだろう。ある曲ではティーガンが作った曲をサラが歌い、また別の曲ではサラが作ったメロディーと歌詞にティーガンが声を貸している。また本作は、二人が初めて全員女性のチームで制作したアルバムでもある。そのチームの中には、プロデューサーのAlex Hope(Troye Sivan、Broods)やエンジニアのRachael Findlen、ミクシング・エンジニアのBeatriz Artola、マスタリング・エンジニアのEmily Lazar、アシスタント・エンジニアのAnnie Kennedyをはじめ、バッキング・ミュージシャンとしてCarla Azar(ドラムス)、Catherine Hiltz(ベース)など才能溢れる女性たちが名を連ねている。

本アルバムは同時期に発売となる回顧録とともに、ティーガン&サラの起源を初めて綴った物語と呼べるだろう。 「このアルバムは、ティーンエイジャーの頃には絶対作れなかったと思う。でも、ここには大人になった私達じゃ絶対作ることが出来なかった曲が一杯詰まっている」 ティーガンの言葉が表すように、『HEY, I'M JUST LIKE YOU』は、二人にとってこれは甘酸っぱくも新鮮な青春のポートレイトなのだ。

When Tegan and Sara began working on a memoir detailing their teenage years, they came across a stash of demo tapes the duo had recorded during that tumultuous time. The songs dealt with heartbreak, identity issues, and growing up, and when they listened back to them, it was clear that quite a few of the songs deserved to be heard. After choosing their favorites, they hired producer Alex Hope to help them bring the songs back to life in a more modern fashion on Hey, Im Just Like You. Unlike the most recent Tegan and Sara albums, the songs arent all up-to-date modern pop. Some are fine examples of that style, like We Dont Have Fun When Were Together Anymore and All I Have to Give the World Is Me, but mostly the album mixes different approaches that theyve used over the years, whether its punk-pop (the super-hooky Ill Be Back Someday), slinky new wave balladry (Hold My Breath Until I Die), alternative folk (Please Help Me), or uplifting emo pop (You Go Away and I Dont Mind). Hope proves a fine collaborator, building nice musical backdrops that range from dramatic and powerful (Dont Believe the Things They Tell You (They Lie) to slick and streamlined (I Know Im Not the Only One). Her arrangements support, but dont compete with, the duos powerful vocals and inspiring lyrics. Even at a young age, both women were skilled at detailing the emotional challenges of life, and though the songs are very specific to their experiences and struggles, the feelings of confusion, pain, and heartbreak that they transmit are universal. There arent any squishy teenage sentiments or half-baked thoughts here; these are fully formed songs that cut deeply. The new arrangements are spot-on in almost every case, and the wisdom the pair have surely gained over the years comes through in the strength and beauty of their vocals. It was a great idea to revisit these songs and the whole team did stellar work making it happen. The only thing that would have made it perfect would have been releasing the original demos alongside the redos so T&S devotees could do some compare-and-contrast work. Thats an extra-credit quibble that can be easily dismissed, though, because in every other way Hey, Im Just Like You is a vital addition to the Tegan and Sara catalog. ~ Tim Sendra

双子のクイン姉妹による3年ぶりの新作は、高校生の頃に吹き込んだカセットテープに眠っていた未発表曲を再録音したものだそう。ザクザクしたパワーコードが心地良い"I'll Be Back Somebody"など二人のパンク愛が随所で顔を出すのも楽しいが、ロック感強めに洗練されたポップ度を誇る楽曲揃いなのが特出した点だろう。プロデューサーから演奏者まで女性のみで構成されているのもまた本作の解放感に繋がったと言えるかも。
