Kicking off Hausu Mountain's series of bootleg-style live tapes, HausLive 1 documents an April 2019 gig by New York jazz-rock freaks Sunwatchers, captured at Chicago's Club Moustache. Made up of tracks from the group's powerful third full-length, Illegal Moves, in addition to material which had yet to appear on a studio recording, the release is an informal, no-frills affair that simply conveys the group's live energy. Fusing spiritual jazz, Krautrock, desert blues, and any other form of ecstatic, uplifting music, Sunwatchers' songs are upbeat, joyous pieces with an underlying theme of resistance and rebirth. The group's swirling guitars and bleating horns dance and sway to knotty rhythms, which occasionally uncoil a bit, as on the more untethered "Everybody Play!" While generally more relaxed than the preceding pieces, "Strollin Coma Blues > The Worm Store" works up from dazed zone-outs to more chaotic, fractured grooves, dousing Suicide-like minimal organ in wild, churning guitar fuzz. Undoubtedly a quick teaser for the group's next studio epic, the tape finds Sunwatchers in typically dazzling, awe-inspiring form. ~ Paul Simpson
