グラミー賞受賞者であるパシフィカ弦楽四重奏団と、世界的ギタリスト、シャロン・イズビンの共演!

弦楽四重奏とギターという珍しい組み合わせによる、スペインとイタリアの作曲家による作品集。ほとんど耳にすることのない秘曲、カステルヌオーヴォ=テデスコのギター五重奏曲は、セゴビアのために書かれた、非常に高い技巧が要求される難曲。ヴィヴァルディのリュート協奏曲ニ長調RV93は、ここではプホールの編曲による「ギター協奏曲」として演奏されており、瞑想的な第2楽章(ラルゴ)での、イズビン独自の極上な装飾音が印象的です。ボッケリーニの五重奏曲は、18世紀ウィーンの古典的なスタイルにフラメンコ風の趣きが加わった作品。そしてトゥリーナの「闘牛士の弔辞」からはプライベートで静かな祈りが聞こえてきます。

Guitarist Sharon Isbin was arguably the instruments preeminent star in the 1980s and 1990s, a golden age for classical guitar music generally. New charismatic players have come along since then, but Isbins playing remains a rare pleasure. Catch her if you can! An example is this 2019 release on Chicagos Cedille label, which features mostly well-worn pieces for guitar and ensemble; the ensemble here is the Pacifica String Quartet. The most familiar of all is the Vivaldi Guitar Concerto in D major, RV 93, heard here in an arrangement by Emilio Pujol and tinkered with by Isbin herself. Isbin applies a good deal of ornamentation to Vivaldis bare lines, which is usually inadvisable for non-Baroque specialists. But Isbins execution here is flawless, and the effect is haunting (sample the slow movement). The rest of the program is Spanish. The little-heard Quintet for guitar and string quartet of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco is a sparkling piece of neoclassicism, played to the hilt by Isbin, and the Quintet for guitar and string quartet, G. 448, of Boccherini, complete with castanets and a tambourine, has the requisite expansiveness and the touch differentiating Boccherinis music from Haydn, Mozart, and other central European models. If theres a complaint its the cavernous collegiate auditorium sound from Cedille, and perhaps that the Pacifica players arent quite in Isbins league. But this is a treat for fans of Isbin, whos doing more teaching than recording these days.
