The 1991 surfing drama A Scene at the Sea was the first pairing of acclaimed filmmaker Takeshi Kitano and composer Joe Hisaishi, a collaboration that later spanned such cult classics as Hana-bi and Kikujiro. Given both men's reputation for quirky action, A Scene at the Sea proves a surprisingly intimate and romantic effort inspired by traditional Japanese music as well as postwar European jazz. Themes like "Cliffside Waltz" and "Bus Stop" boast a gentle atmosphere buoyed by Hisaishi's lithe piano, while the main theme, "Silent Love," employs Oriental percussion and otherworldly vocals to shimmering effect. The climactic "Wave Cruising" best anticipates Hisaishi scores to come via its intense percussion and frenetic melody. ~ Jason Ankeny
