ロック・フェスの原点、ウッドストック。1969年8月に開催され、全世界に衝撃的な反響を与えたこのロック・フェスティヴァルは、ポピュラー・ミュージック史及びサブカルチャー史において"60年代最重要事件"の一つとして記憶され、1960年代アメリカのカウンターカルチャーを象徴する出来事として語り継がれることとなる。

その歴史的フェスティヴァルから50年目を迎える今年、2019年―― "ウッドストック"とその時代を振り返る作品が数々リリースされる。その中心にあるのは、ウッドストックのオーディオ・ドキュメンタリーとも呼べるであろう、『WOODSTOCK - BACK TO THE GARDEN - 50TH ANNIVERSARY EXPERIENCE』だが、この夏、その記念すべき年、1969年にリリースされたアルバムをアナログ・レコードで復刻するシリーズ、"SUMMER OF '69"がRHINO RECORDSからリリースとなる。ラインナップの中には、グレイトフル・デッドやジェファーソン・エアプレイン、CS&Nやアーロ・ガスリーなどウッドストックに出演したアーティストの作品から、1969年近辺にリリースされた名盤の数々が含まれている。

アメリカ・フォーク/ロック・シーンに燦然と輝く革命的グループ、バッファロー・スプリングフィールド。あまりに革新的で早すぎたツワモノたちが、バッファロー・スプリングフィールド名義で初のショウを行なった1966年に発表したデビュー・アルバムが本作である。 胸を刺すような歌詞をフィーチャーした「For What It's Worth」といった象徴的なプロテスト・ソングの他、「Burned」や「Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It」、バンドにとって最初のシングル曲となった「Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing」といった楽曲を収録。今回リリースとなるのは、ステレオ・ヴァージョンとなる。(1966年作品)

Goldmine - "...sounds better than ever, commendable mastering..."

The band themselves were displeased with this record, feeling that the production did not capture their on-stage energy and excitement. Yet to most ears, this debut sounds pretty great, featuring some of their most melodic and accomplished songwriting and harmonies, delivered with a hard-rocking punch. "For What It's Worth" was the hit single, but there are several other equally stunning treasures. Stephen Stills' "Go and Say Goodbye" was a pioneering country-rock fusion; his "Sit Down I Think I Love You" was the band at their poppiest and most early Beatlesque; and his "Everybody's Wrong" and "Pay the Price" were tough rockers. Although Neil Young has only two lead vocals on the record (Richie Furay sang three other Young compositions), he's already a songwriter of great talent and enigmatic lyricism, particularly on "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," "Out of My Mind," and "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong." The entire album bursts with thrilling guitar and vocal interplay, with a bright exuberance that would tone down considerably by their second record. [Some reissues present both mono and stereo mixes of the album, and include "Baby Don't Scold Me" (which was on the first pressing of the record, but was soon replaced by "For What It's Worth").] ~ Richie Unterberger
