The eponymous debut solo outing from the spell-casting English singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rosalie Cunningham dials back on some of the stoner rock aspects of her work with the now-defunct Purson, in favor of an approach that owes as much to early, prog-minded Queen as it does exploitation films and biker metal. The mastermind behind both Ipso Facto and the aforementioned London acid-rockers Purson, Cunningham's self-coined "vaudeville carny psych" sound may have evolved over the years, but her charismatic theater-major presence and knack for coming up with inventive arrangements that never feel like pastiche still ring true. In going it fully alone, Cunningham has distilled her flamboyant style into something more substantive, though no less kaleidoscopic. A steampunk-kissed and Roger Corman-inspired amalgam of Dreamboat Annie-era Heart and Mark Wirtz's A Teenage Opera, the eight-track set is bereft of a single dull moment. The vampy "Fuck Love" preens and struts with the weightlessness of emotional sovereignty, while the elaborate "House of the Glass Red" and "Dethroning of the Party Queen" temper their sonic ambitions with earworm melodies and clever phrasing. Cunningham goes all-in on the nearly 14-minute closer "Yarn from the Wheel, a fantastical epic that's both a master class in psych-rock world building and a melodic showstopper. ~ James Christopher Monger
