Although their follow-up album, C'EST CHIC, was the one that contained their anthemic disco hit "La Freak," this 1977 debut set the stage for the band's ultimate success as one of the iconic vocal groups of the disco era. Songwriters Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (guitarist and bassist, respectively) were masters at concocting simple, driving grooves with percussive, hooky basslines, and an aura of decadent fun, underscored by the indiscriminate dropping of French expressions. Lead singer Norma Jean Wright was particularly expressive in her upper range, creating a template for the hot-to-trot, feline sound associated with female disco vocalists. Backing singer Alfa Anderson holds her own here, too, and the women's voices blend well on such hits as "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "Strike Up the Band."

70年代後半に全世界を席巻したディスコ・ブームの中で、最も斬新かつ緻密なサウンド・クォリティでディスコ・フリークをトリコにしたCHIC。ナイル・ロジャースとバーナード・エドワーズを中心メンバーとし、「おしゃれフリーク(Le Freak)」、「グッド・タイムス(Good Times)」などの全米No.1ヒットを世に送り出し、ディスコ・ムーブメントを牽引した。ナイル・ロジャースとバーナード・エドワーズはプロデューサーとしても活躍し、マドンナやデヴィッド・ボウイ、ダイアナ・ロスなどのアーティストをプロデュースし、大ヒットさせた。またドラムスのトニー・トンプソンはその後パワー・ステーションなどで活動している。

ディスコ・レジェンドとして、またスーパー・プロデューサーとして、世代とジャンルを超え、多大なリスペクトを集めるナイル・ロジャース。2013年のダフト・パンク「ゲット・ラッキー」での共演を始め、昨年、約25年振りの新作スタジオ・アルバム『It's About Time』をナイル・ロジャース&シック名義で発表したが、そのナイル監修による、オリジナル・アルバム初期3作の"シグネチャー・リマスター"が、2019年6月21日にアナログLPで発売となる。こちらの音源は昨年「おしゃれフリーク(Le Freak)」の発売40周年を記念してリリースされたボックス・セット『THE CHIC ORGANIZATION 1977-1979 [5CD]』に収録されていたもの。オリジナル・アルバムのアナログLPで復刻となる。

今回リリースとなる初期3作は、いずれもアトランティック保管のオリジナル・ステレオ・マスターテープから、アビー・ロード・スタジオでマイルズ・ショウェルによって新たにリマスターされている。ナイル・ロジャーズはエクゼクティヴ・プロデューサーとして、バーナード・エドワーズ・エステートの許諾のもと、リマスターの監修を行った。また各作品とも、ハーフスピード・マスタリング採用の高音質180グラム重量盤で発売。

リマスター音源について、ナイル・ロジャースは以下のように語っている「バーナードと私が作りだした素晴らしい音楽のおかげで、私は自分が望んだ通りの人生を送ることが出来た。自分たちの音楽は商業的にも、そして芸術的にも、史上最も素晴らしいものの一つとして認められたが、それこそが、我々が限度を知らない、そしてパートナーシップも自然な二人の若きミュージシャンだった頃から、望んでいたことだった。史上最高のレコード・レーベルの一つ、アトランティック・レコードで最も売れたシングルを生み出すことが出来たんだ、まさに夢のようだね!私にとって大事だったのは、バーナードへのトリビュートとして、この作品を、今までの中で最高の音質のものにすることだった。マイルス・ショウェルとアビー・ロードのチームは、それを成し遂げたと私は自信を持って言えるね。40年経ったいまでも、全てがとても新鮮に聴こえるんだ」

When Chic's self-titled debut album came out in 1978, many rock critics gave it very negative reviews and failed to see just how rhythmically and harmonically exciting Chic's blend of funk, soul, and Euro-disco was. But one critic who often gave Chic favorable coverage was Don Waller, who hit the nail on the head when he exalted the band as "an uptown version of Booker T & the MG's." It was a most insightful analogy -- Chic's music was a lot sleeker than Booker T & the MG's raw, instrumental Memphis soul, but like Booker T., the Niles Rodgers/Bernard Edwards team turned out some of the most infectious and influential R&B party grooves of their era. Although not quite as strong as Chic's next two albums -- C'est Chic and Risque -- would be, this highly enjoyable album put the group on the map commercially thanks to the infectious hits "Dance, Dance, Dance" and "Everybody Dance." Some rock critics saw Chic as just another faceless disco production, but, in fact, the opposite is true -- with this album, Chic fashioned a very distinctive and recognizable sound that proved to be as influential in its era as Booker T & the MGs were in theirs. The sound that Chic established with this album was one that everyone from Queen and ABC to Sister Sledge, the Sugarhill Gang, and Madonna would benefit from. ~ Alex Henderson
