Left-coast rapper Mack 10 has been around the proverbial block a few times since his 1996 Westside Connection debut, which probably accounts for his relaxed, world-weary style on this journey through what must be well-trodden territory to rap aficionados. The 'hood may be in many locations, but it's been full of the same characters and the same situations since time immemorial, or at least since it was known as the ghetto. Chirpy Funkadelic/Outkast-type beats are much in evidence here, providing a colorful backdrop to Mack 10's familiar but never boring tales on tracks such as "Welcome To the Hood," "Hittin' Switches," and "Life As a Gangster" ("you can hate it but it ain't complicated"), and elevating PRESENTS DA HOOD well above the gangsta-rap norm.
