Personnel: Gary Burton (vibraphone); Michael Goodrick (guitar); Abraham Laboriel (bass); Harry Blazer (drums). Recorded at Aengus Studio, Fayville, Massachusetts on March 5 & 6, 1973. Personnel: Mick Goodrick (guitar); Harry Blazer (drums). Audio Mixers: Kurt Rapp; Martin Wieland. Recording information: Aengus Studios, Fayville, Mass (03/1973). This new quartet marked the beginning of a new era of Gary Burton's recordings. With a sizable and varied discography on two labels already behind him, Burton became one of the key players in the early ECM Records stable. Guitarist Mick Goodrick and the rhythm section of drummer Harry Blazer and bassist Abraham Laboriel provide Burton's vibes with the sprightly support and interplay that others borrowed from and took into the realm of fusion. Burton, happily, did not. This quartet seems well aware of the world of rock and pop, but they draw from it without becoming it. It also helps that the material is so well tailored to the ensemble. There are a couple tunes each by Gordon Beck and British composer Michael Gibbs. The folkish melody of Carla Bley's "Olhos De Gato" turns out to be a tour-de-force for Burton, as his notes bend with the supple ease of young trees. "Open Your Eyes, You Can Fly" was written by Chick Corea with whom Burton recorded the popular and influential duet album, CRYSTAL SILENCE (also released in 1973).
