Throw

"Throw" was originally released as the "throwaway" B-side for the first 12" on the U.K. label Open, but after putting a world of both techno and house headz into a frenzy, Carl Craig then re-released it were it belonged, on the A-side of a Planet E 12". "Throw" is the perfect testament to how the best dance records are usually the simplest. There's something about this basic half-bar looped bassline, sampled from the breakdown of another one of Craig's favorite disco records, that makes for an utterly infectious dance epic. The track's finishing touch is that bit of signature Craig quirkiness, which in this case is this silly falsetto solo in the song's extended breakdown. This record has an interesting irony to it because while "Throw" was named literally and issued as a throwaway B-side to Craig's remake of Manuel Gottsching's E2-E4, "Remake" ended up being the true "throwaway." For the B-side of the Planet E release, Craig's remake was substituted by Basic Channel's reshape of the same seminal German proto-techno record. "'Remake' Basic Reshape" is a stunning masterpiece where Basic Channel, in their impeccable tastefulness, stylizes the key elements of E2-E4 to maintain their unmistakable sound. Surely one of this label's finest releases, in addition to being the only Planet E record issued on several different colors of vinyl, Throw is no throwaway. ~ Carlos Souffront
