Although most people are probably aware of this album only because its cover (a photo of a man drowning in a phone booth by a deserted highway) is in every single one of those album cover art books, DEADLINES is a controversial album among Strawbs fans. It is nearly impossible to find someone without a strong opinion on it, and among folk purists this opinion is decidedly negative. DEADLINES is a pure prog-pop album with no folk elements whatsoever, even on a cover of the folk-pop standard "I Don't Want to Talk About It." It could just as well be by Klaatu or 10cc. On the other hand, Klaatu and 10cc are fine bands, and even during the Sandy Denny years, the Strawbs were never interested in folk purism. "Joey and Me" and the atmospheric "Deadly Nightshade" are particular highlights.
