The 1987 box-office flop Project X was some distance in James Horner's rearview mirror by the time he scored hits like Jumanji and Mighty Joe Young, but its score remains his most appealing work in the monkey-movie genre as well as one of his most lively and rousing action efforts, period. Per usual, Horner avoids subtlety as if it were radioactive -- his melodies are bold and brash, galvanized by blustery brass, swooping strings, and crashing timpani. Familiar motifs abound -- Horner enthusiasts will note the reappearance of sections from Class Action, Wolfen, and other scores -- but as pure, larger-than-life adventure goes, Project X delivers spectacularly. ~ Jason Ankeny
