Conventional wisdom states that the Byrds by 1971 were a shadow of their legendary mid-'60s incarnation--essentially a cobbled-together group of hired guns surrounding lone original Roger McGuinn. Studio misfires such as 1971's BYRDMANIAX have long bolstered this idea. This Royal Albert Hall live set--saved from tapes that had sat long forgotten in McGuinn's garage--dashes such notions. By 1971, the Byrds were thriving as something they had never been before: a knockout live act.
Featuring drummer Gene Parsons, bassist Skip Battin, and flatpicking god Clarence White, this version of the Byrds rips through an All-American revue of rural roots music and their own signature styles: folk rock, country rock, and psychedelia. McGuinn's cyclical 12-string riffs find their perfect counterpart in White's liquid silver telecaster leads as the two form one of the most impressive twin guitar tandems in rock history. But, wisely, McGuinn keeps a low profile here, and White is certainly the star of this show. From acoustic bluegrass numbers like "Black Mountain Rag/Soldier's Joy" to the taut twang of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" to the miasmic psychedelia of "Eight Miles High," this set is the most comprehensive sampling of--and best introduction to--White's flatpicking genius.
Rounded out by the band's trademark harmonies (and some minor period trappings such as the patience-trying drum solo lead-in to "Eight Miles High"), LIVE AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL 1971 merits inclusion in the band's expansive canon of essentials.
