INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE contains studio outtakes, demo, live and rare recordings, songs from the albums EARWIG and SUNBURN and the EPs ROSY JACK WORLD and NICELY, NICELY. An aptly-titled compilation for a band named (on the suggestion of Allen Ginsberg, according to legend) after the great British poet William Blake, this well-annotated 46-minute, 14-song retrospective acts as a strong introduction to this influential Boston trio for neophytes. The best tracks from their three albums and two EPs, including gems like "I'm Not Your Mother," "Cesspool" and their breakthrough MTV/college radio hit "Out There," are all present and accounted for. However, INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE is also useful for longtime fans of the band, as it includes a number of demos reaching back to their first 1986 sessions and a pair of live tracks. The Blake Babies are most often remembered as the launching pad for the careers of bassist-singer Juliana Hatfield and guitarist John P. Strohm, but this thoughtful compilation proves that they were an excellent band on their own merits.
