Admittedly, a horn section is not the first thing one thinks of in connection with Muddy Waters' Chicago blues. That was exactly the point, as the late '60s found Chess attempting to expand Muddy's appeal by placing him in unusual contexts ("psychedelic" blues-rock, acoustic Delta blues, etc.). On this 1966 recording, the aim was to push Muddy to the audience that favored the more cosmopolitan, uptown sounds of artists like B.B. King. In fact, Muddy recorded all these tracks with his band sans horns, which were overdubbed the following day. While the horn section's presence is more distraction than revelation, Muddy's crack '60s band, including James Cotton and Otis Spann, is unrelentingly sharp, and it's interesting to hear Waters step slightly outside his usual repertoire. Predictably, however, the brightest moments here are the ones where the horns are either absent or easy to ignore.
