Simon Green's DJ sets are often more club-geared than much of his eclectic body of work as Bonobo. Fabric Presents Bonobo isn't his first commercially released mix, but it's far more reflective of what witnessing Green DJ is like, as opposed to the bedroom listening of his LateNightTales mix. Kicking off the 20-year anniversary celebration of the revered London superclub, Bonobo's mix for Fabric maintains the eclecticism of his original work, but it's entirely driven by up-tempo house beats. Not just a faceless mix of anonymous tracks, there's still just as much emotion and personality as his own compositions; even though only a handful of these tracks were made by Green, the mix doesn't sound like it could've come from anyone else. Starting off with unreleased Bonobo gem "Flicker," the mix progresses with tracks blending jazzy bass lines, strong drums, and occasionally acoustic instruments (strings, horns, thumb pianos, and more). Along the way, it gets lusher, spacier, and deeper; clearly much consideration was put into the track selection and pacing. Most of the tracks aren't played out in full, so they make their impact and elevate to the next level, but it never feels like there's a rush to get through as many tracks as possible. Following a more soulful midsection, the mix gets more intense with cuts like Laurent Garnier's epic remix of Rone's "Mirapolis" and Throwing Snow's suspenseful rave blaster "Rheged." After a few more tracks that mix choppy but not heavy breaks and crystalline textures, the mix ends with a vintage slice of ambient techno from John Beltran's 1996 classic Ten Days of Blue. A stunning mix that remains exciting for its entire duration, Fabric Presents Bonobo is highly recommended. ~ Paul Simpson
