Though he's rightly regarded as the father of rock & roll, it should never be forgotten that Chuck Berry's musical vision was largely informed by the blues. His longtime pianist/comrade-at-arms Johnnie Johnson, who had a huge influence of Berry's early compositions, came from a solid blues background. recorded for Chess during the early part of his career. Though "Worried Life Blues" and "Deep Feeling" show that Berry could get down and out with the best of them, he's got too much joie de vivre to stay down for long, so most of his blues efforts are full of vitality, like "Blues for Hawaiians" and "Merry Christmas Baby."
