Liner Note Author: Stuart Cameron.
Every few years, the meager discography of the ridiculous glitter-pop band Chicory Tip gets recycled, but 2019's The Complete Chicory Tip is the first to contain every recording the band ever made -- every A-side, every flip, including their last single for Route Records. This amounts to 30 songs, which isn't much more than the 22-track 2007 set The Singles Collection or the 23-track 2002 comp The Best of Chicory Tip, but this extra space allows for further documentation of the ridiculousness of Chicory Tip. And make no mistake, they were among the silliest band of the '70s, launching their career with a synth-powered glam stomp called "Song of My Father" -- a song written by Giorgio Moroder, of all people -- before taking a detour into mock-Americana by covering CCR, spending a lot of time with shlocky AM pop, flirting with dumb hard rock a la Slade, attempting to rip off their own hit and then cutting such quintessentially British nonsense as "I Love Onions." A lot of this, like the latter, is better in theory than practice, but that's also some of the fun of the compilation: it's an archaeological dig through the most absurd aspects of '70s junk culture. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
