Robin Hood is one of the lesser-known lights of the Detroit techno scene, but you wouldn't think that listening to his recordings. His later NIGHTTIME WORLD united the enveloping melodies of soul with the hardcore machine codes of techno and house; INTERNAL EMPIRE, by contrast, is Hood's techno blueprint, equal parts dancefloor dance storm, techno contemplation, and intelligent experimentation. The liquid swirls of "Minus" and the title track place Hood foursquare in the Detroit residential communities of Mills and Atkins, while the superb "Home" could be a Warp label release, post-IDM, with its slippery beats, oceanic synth washes, and seething electronics. Traditional techno rears its head on tracks such as "Spirit Levels," which work handclaps and bell sounds to repetitive effect, and "Chase," where kick drums and hi-hat assemblies pummel the surface, while Kraftwerk-like synth squirts merge with robotic sensors gone haywire. INTERNAL EMPIRE is a minor classic of its genre.
