エルガーの「カラクタクス」!

2003年から2016年まで名古屋フィルの常任指揮者を務め、2016年からはイングリッシュ・ナショナル・オペラの音楽監督という大役を任されているマーティン・ブラビンズ。ウォルトンやエルガー、ヴォーン・ウィリアムズ、ティペットらの録音で高い評価を得てきたブラビンズの英国音楽最新作は、「エニグマ変奏曲」の直前に書かれた合唱と管弦楽のための作品「カラクタクス」が登場。「カラクタクス」は、「黒騎士」(1893)、「生命の光」(1896)、「オラフ王」(1896)、「聖ジョージの旗」(1897)など、大規模な合唱作品を発表し名声を高めていった1890年代のエルガーによる最後の合唱作品。オペラハウスとコンサートホールの両面で活躍するオペラ・ノース管弦楽団と、同じウェスト・ヨークシャー州のハダースフィールド合唱協会(マーティン・ブラビンズとは、ブライアンの交響曲第1番〔CDA67971〕でも共演)、そしてエリザベス・ルウェリン、クリストファー・パーヴェスらの名歌手たちを見事にまとめ上げ、エルガーの揺るぎない価値と栄光を表現しています。
