Billed as the soundtrack to a trucker comedy from 1977 that's forgotten by most but beloved by those who remember, Stinker Lets Loose is a pretty clever send-up of a culture that produced Smokey & the Bandit and The Dukes of Hazzard. Billed to one C.J. McKnight -- a dead ringer for the moniker C.W. McCall, which itself was the creation of an adman looking to plug Old Home Bread long before Mr. McCall had a hit with "Convoy" in 1976 -- Stinker Lets Loose borrows a bit of Jerry Reed's bug-eyed humor and more than a bit of Waylon Jennings' country swagger, a blend that's played for more affection than laughs, which is one of the reasons it's amusing. The other endearing thing about this purported soundtrack is how its lean 26 minutes are padded out by instrumentals, radio mixes, and other ephemera that all recycle its "Eastbound and Down"/"Good Ol Boys" hybrid title track. By keeping their focus narrow, McKnight and his boys wind up saluting the junkiness of '70s soundtracks, which means anybody with a fondness for this period will crack a smile by this good-hearted jape. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
