Recording information: Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg (11/1984).
Five fine post-bop players play with fluidity and verve. There are moments of beautiful restraint and others of monumental exuberance and wild abandon--everyone gets into it on one of saxophonist Steve Coleman's two originals, "Gridlock (Opus 8)." Of note among the five players are two of the '60s' pioneering jazz musicians, trombonist Julian Priester and trumpet/flugelhorn player Kenny Wheeler (Holland has appeared on many of his titles, including the excellent GNU HIGH).
"Walk-a-way" is a duet of Holland on bass and Marvin "Smitty" Smith on drums and percussion. Holland's propulsion lays the foundation for Smith to cut loose on, and all with a rather quiet grace. Wheeler's "The Good Doctor" starts with his mournful solitary tone, and increases slowly and incremental, bringing in flute and bass, and finally the drums and trombone.
