Not to be confused with the 1967 Mercury soundtrack of the same name, TURN ON, TUNE IN , DROP OUT is the first available CD version of Dr. Timothy Leary's original 1966 spoken-word LP on ESP-Disk. In a low-key, quasi-hypnotic voice that's either soothing or disturbing in equal measure, Dr. Leary hawks his message of raised consciousness through psychoactive drugs in persistent and persuasive fashion. But is this album anything more than a camp '60s artifact nearly 50 years after its time? Whether or not a contemporary audience is truly open to Leary's message, one wouldn't deny that TURN ON is still a genuine if creepy meditative experience, and not that far removed from similar recordings by fellow gurus like Alan Watts or Baba Ram Dass.
