Super Furry Animals came of age during the mad days of the late '90s, a period when the music business was awash with multi-part singles and avenues for promotion. One of these was naturally the BBC, which had more to offer emerging bands than a John Peel Session. Super Furry Animals cut two Peel Sessions in addition to a set at Peel Acres, and they're here on the double-CD/quadruple-LP At the BBC, along with sessions for shows hosted by Steve Lamacq, Jo Whiley, and Mark Radcliffe. Everything here was recorded between 1996 and 2001, a period that runs between their debut Fuzzy Logic and Rings Around the World, the album where they entered their mature phase, one that relied more on the studio than the stage. As such, the music on At the BBC crackles with the excitement of discovery: not only are SFA figuring out what they're best at, they're figuring out how to execute it. On the earliest session, they're a little tentative (but never hesitant), but by 1998, they're soaring high above the clouds. Bookending the collection with versions of "God! Show Me Magic" illustrates this point effortlessly: the 1996 version is appealingly garage, but the 1999 version is the equivalent of fireworks exploding in the sky. Most of At the BBC is closer to the latter than the former, sounding nervier and bolder than their studio albums, and that's why this is an essential part of their legacy: it proves what a tremendous live band Super Furry Animals were in their prime. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
