Recorded in London during a bitter battle between the American Federation of Musicians and the Musicians Union, Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick somehow eluded U.S. release in the years to follow, and that's a shame, as it's one of Paul Gonsalves' hippest sessions. Teamed with pianist Pat Smythe, bassist Kenny Napper, and drummer Ronnie Stevenson, Gonsalves' soulful tenor leads flex their estimable muscles across a series of storming hard bop cuts that underscore his remarkable gift for melody. As always, Gonsalves' solos are thoughtful and clear, but he seems to loosen up a bit here as well, and the result is one of his liveliest and most accessible recordings. ~ Jason Ankeny
