インディーロックとワールドミュージックを融合させたサウンドで多くの音楽ファンから絶大なる支持を集める天才シンガー・ソングライター、ザック・コンドン率いる大所帯バンド、ベイルートが前作『No No No』(2015年作)以来となる5作目を〈4AD〉よりリリース。トランペットやアコーディオン、チェロやウクレレといった様々な楽器を組み合わせて奏でる華やかな音色と、ザック・コンドンの優美なヴォーカルは、まさに古のヨーロッパの街並みすら想像させる。
実に3年振りとなる本作は、デビュー作『The Gulag Orkestar』(2006年作)と2作目『The Flying Club Cup』(2007年作)の作曲時と同じオルガンを使用しニューヨークとベルリン、そして南イタリアのプーリア州の奥田舎に潜むスタジオ施設でレコーディングされた。「自分の今までの古い作品と新しい作品が融合したカタルシスのように感じられ、昔、僕が体験していたような、体で直に感じる音楽の喜びが戻ってきた」とザック自身も語る通り、静かな環境での制作が新たなアイデンティティーを生み出しつつも、これまでのキャリアで築き上げてきたベイルート・サウンドの核となる情緒豊かな作風は残した作品となっている。

ザック・コンドン率いるベイルートの3年ぶりの新作。城塞都市に触発されたという表題曲をはじめ、随所で古き良きヨーロッパ風の異国情緒が漂っているのは、ドイツやイタリアのスタジオを拠点に作られたからだろう。ザックの柔和な歌声を包むように祝祭的な雰囲気を醸すブラスやオルガンと、仄かな哀愁を帯びたアコーディオンやチェロの響きが交じり合った、ノスタルジックなのに眩いほど鮮烈なサウンドが美しい。

Gallipoli｜CDアルバム
ワールドミュージックやジャズをバックボーンにしながらもクラシックの様な耽美な要素も兼ね備えていて。オーガニックで穏やかでいて、そこに混じる人の作為感じるミステリアスな電子音の融合が妙に耳に心地よくて、柔らかい綿に包まれているかの様な安心感を覚える。アカデミックな音楽を欲する方にも、新しい音を探している方にも合致する、ポップスと銘打つには言葉が足りない素晴らしい音楽作品です。
