Curt Boettcher may be best known for his production work with the Association, but in fact he was the focal point of some of L.A.'s finest '60s psych-pop, spearheading the groups Sagittarius, the Ballroom, and the Millennium. Boettcher's solo work was sorely underrepresented until the 2000 UK release of this late '60s recording, which was accompanied by the solo releases from Boettcher's Millennium cohorts Joey Stec and Sandy Salisbury, as well as a disc of previously unheard Millennium material. The personnel is virtually identical on Boettcher's and Salisbury's discs, and there's certainly a sonic commonality (both are produced by Boettcher) that focuses on harmony-laden, lushly arranged '60s sunshine pop a la the Beach Boys. Contrasting the two releases, though, it becomes clear that like Brian Wilson, Boettcher was a quirky visionary. Oddness (a loopy version of the cowboy song "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," various left-field production touches) walks hand in hand with Boettcher's unique melodic gift and breathtaking arrangement skills. For anyone interested in '60s pop, MISTY MIRAGE is a must, and a welcome addition to the Boettcher legacy.
