Karaoke for One: Vol. 1 is the second full-length release from eclectic U.K. indie pop project Insecure Men. The musical vehicle of former Fat White Family guitarist Saul Adamczewski and Childhood member Ben Romans-Hopcraft, Insecure Men issued their self-titled debut in February 2018, offering up a pleasingly wonky mishmash of smart psychedelia, soft rock, lo-fi, and assorted slacker nuggets made with craft and pop smarts. Appearing just eight months later is this rickety collection of cover songs whose title suggests that a sequel probably isn't far off. Credited solely to Adamczewski, Karaoke for One has the hallmarks of a silly weekend project, a dare, or a late-career unloading of hissy demos from a deep vault. That it's Insecure Men's second album (in a year) speaks either of their chutzpah, indifference, or prolific nature. Still, that's not to say there isn't some strange magic in Adamczewski's wobbly rendition of the Carpenters' "Rainy Days and Mondays" or the unkempt menace in his take on Dr. Feelgood's pub rock classic, "Roxette." Even the droning minimalism of the Sandy Denny & the Strawbs ballad "Sail Away to the Sea" has some lonesome allure. ~ Timothy Monger
