On the strength of the gently rolling mid-tempo ballad "Close the Door," Teddy Pendergrass's 1978 sophomore effort gained serious recognition at the time of its release, and announced that Pendergrass was well on his way to becoming a major figure on the R&B scene. Philadelphia International had their slick grooves and top-notch production treatments down by the late '70s, and, as a result, LIFE IS A SONG WORTH SINGING is non-stop aural pleasure. Though he is known primarily as a balladeer, Pendergrass could also get loose and funky, and one of the appealing things about LIFE IS A SONG is its shifts in mood and tempo. Both "Only You" and "Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose" are jams worthy of the dance floor. On both uptempo tracks and slow jams, though, the man's voice--smooth, rough, intimate, and intense all at once--is never less than thrilling. This was Pendergrass's first true solo gem.
