The O'Jays: Eddie Levert, William Powell, Walter Williams (vocals). Additional personnel: Leonard Pakula (arranger, organ); Ronnie Baker (arranger, bass); Thom Bell, Norman Harris, Bobby Martin (arranger); Bunny Sigler (guitar, piano); Roland Chambers, Bobby Eli, Norman Harris (guitar); Leon Huff (piano); Vince Montana (vibraphone); Earl Young (drums); Larry Washington (congas, bongos); Don Renaldo And His Strings And Horns. Producers: Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, Bunny Sigler. Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1972. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. This is part of Legacy's Rhythm & Soul series. With its in-house staff and recognizable sound, the Philadelphia International label was an early 70s equivalent of 60s Tamla/Motown. Flagship harmony act the O'Jays revelled in its sumptuous arrangements and flowing rhythms, as this excellent album testifies. Producers and songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff sculpted brilliant scenarios for the group; cautionary, in the case of the exhilarating title track, or clarion calls for universal brotherhood, as exemplified in 'Love Train'. The O'Jays brought many years of experience to these recordings, and on Back Stabbers found a spiritual home for their considerable talents. The orchestral arrangements are breathtaking.

商品の紹介

Melody Maker (7/13/96, p.52) - "...a stone-classic....file next to WHAT'S GOING ON, SUPERFLY and THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON."
Rovi

A major turning point for the O'Jays, Back Stabbers took the group to the top of the charts and made them household names in the R&B world. The O'Jays had been paying serious dues since the late '50s, and their perseverance payed off in a major way when the unsettling title song, the infectious "Time to Get Down," and the uplifting "Love Train" became their biggest hits up to that point. Indeed, this album did more than its part to help establish Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Records as the most successful soul label since Stax and Motown. ~ Alex Henderson
