The O'Jays: Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell. Recorded at Hammersmith Odeon, London, England and Central Hall, Chatham, England in December 1973. Originally released on Philadelphia International (32953). Includes original release liner notes by Tony Blackburn and new liner notes by Michael Gonzales. Digitally remastered by Tom Ruff (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). A document of the first Philadelphia International record label package tour of Europe in 1972, LIVE IN LONDON showcases the O'Jays (who were preceded by labelmates the Three Degrees and Billy Paul) at the beginning of their long run of hits. More to the point, the group was at the height of its powers. There are epic versions of their best early hits--the ominous sounding "Backstabbers" clocks in at over eight minutes. The group's vocals and its touring band's performances are never less than stellar, in particular lead singer Eddie Levert. Don't miss his wonderfully corny for-the-ladies intro to Bunny Sigler's "Sunshine."
