Although DAN LOVES PATTI disappeared from view almost immediately upon its 1996 release, the album gained belated notoriety via a controversial 1998 article in Harper's magazine. The piece, written by a friend of Yum-Yum leader Chris Holmes, alleged that DAN LOVES PATTI's ironic critique of pop music in its most diluted and commercial form only failed because its potential audience was-to put it bluntly-too dumb to appreciate the album's obvious commercial attributes, much less its veiled agenda. What did not enter into the writer's thesis is that Yum-Yum's brand of acoustic, orchestral light pop has not set the sales charts afire since the days of the Left Banke. On its own merits, however, DAN LOVES PATTI is a diverting collection of wispy orchestrated pop tunes that should appeal to fans of the more challenging Richard Davies and John Southworth.
