Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Shay Haley are back for more genre-bending funk rock and experimental hip-pop on SEEING SOUNDS. The album title reportedly refers to synesthesia--a rare neurological phenomenon that results in a mixture of the senses--but, like all of N.E.R.D.'s sonic excursions, album three might be better named after schizophrenia! The boys continue to expand on their already eclectic musical foundations, each song defying the standards established by its predecessor. Pharrell does his best Lil Jon impression on "Anti Matter," as fevered shouts of "What!" pepper the marching-band drum track. "Spaz" meshes a Beastie Boys-esque rhyme scheme with a hyper Drum `N' Bass background. "Yeah You" is a leisure-suit lounge take on Cake's brand of deadpan rock, while "Sooner or Later" works like a tongue-in-cheek lampoon of a tear-jerking Brit-Pop ballad. From start to finish, SEEING SOUNDS is an audible rollercoaster that refuses to be classified.

2008年に発売されたN.E.R.D.『Seeing Sounds』が2曲のボーナス・トラック付き、2枚組のLPになって初めて発売!ボーナス・トラック2曲は"Lazer Gun"とKanye West、Lupe Fiasco、 Pusha Tが参加した"Everyone Nose (All The Girls Standing In Line For The Bathroom)" が収録されている。
インタースコープ・レコーズ移籍後、発売した3rdアルバム。このアルバムでロックンロールの要素を取り込んだ音の"大気圏"を探求し、限界やルールは皆無の「音楽的空間」を創り出した。ビルボード200のアルバム・チャート7位を記録。初週に8万枚を売り上げ、世界的にも成功を収めた。

「ファレルがボルティモア・クラブのビートを買い漁ってるみたいよ。そのうち自分が発見したビートだ、って世に出すんじゃない?」とは、昨年インタヴューしたM.I.A.の弁。んで、〈ファレルが提供してくれたボルティモアの最新ダンス・ミュージックよ～〉なんて仰ったのは今年のマドンナ様。何だかねえ。ついでに言えば、ファレルが手掛けたソランジュの新曲“I Decided”はマーサ&ヴァンデラスの某曲をマーク・ロンソン風にリメイク（?）したものだったり……流行とはそんなものなので、そのこと自体は別にいい。ただ、現在のネプチューンズは、偉大なトレンドセッターだった頃とは何もかもが異なるということだ。 　どんどん分業化を明確にしていたネプだが、ソロ作『In My Mind』以降もスター街道を突き進むファレルに対し、相方のチャド・ヒューゴは子飼いのケナを送り出して裏方としての評価をさらに高め、そのケナを新たな相棒にしてアシュリー・シンプソンらを手掛けるなど独自の道を歩んでいる。つまり、N.E.R.D.のプロジェクトはコンビが手を合わせる数少ない（?）機会というわけで、今回登場したサード・アルバム『Seeing Sounds』には、いままでとは少し違う期待を抱いていたのである。 　で、結論から言うと出来は素晴らしい!　ややマッチョな雰囲気もあった前作『Fly Or Die』に比べれば、ナードそのものだった初期の彼らのような箱庭感が戻ってきているし、その実験場からハミ出さんと大暴れするかのようなダイナミズムも健在だ。ロックンロール・ハイフィーと呼びたい先行シングル“Everyone Nose（All The Girls Standing In The Line For The Bathroom）”を筆頭に、今回はハイフィー風な声ネタのループが目立つが、アイデア一発で組み立てられたような曲は一聴してのイメージ以上に少ない。「他のアーティストのプロデュースでは踏み込めなかったことも、ここには反映できている」とファレルも認めるように、どんな着想ももう一段階上に引き上げるハイブリッドなひと手間がかけられている。『In My Mind』に足りなかったサムシングが今回は揃っている気がするのも、やはりチャドと組んだ時のファレルは違う、ということじゃないか。 　都会的なジャズ調の“Yeah You”もおもしろい雰囲気だし、シュガー・ヒル・ギャング調のラップがダークなファスト・ビーツに絡む“Kill Joy”や爆裂ブレイクス“Spaz”にも驚かされた。一方で、どう聴いてもリヴァプールっぽい幻想ナンバー“Sooner Or Later”や“Happy”のような正調ロック・チューンもホントに格好良い。シネスシージア（共感覚）を元に名付けられたというアルバム・タイトルどおり、聴く者にさまざまな光景を見せてくれるような傑作だ。
