The fifth studio album from Timmy's Organism is another blast of hot-wired rock fury similar to the Detroit trio's Third Man release Heartless Heathen, rather than the project's weirder, noisier early material. Kicking off with the sound of a motorcycle revving up and tearing out, Timmy Vulgar howls "I'm gonna puke fire!" during the opening salvo "Guzzle Gasoline." Subsequent songs continue in the vein of shouty, hearty rock & roll, sometimes augmenting the standard guitar/bass/drums formation with piano or organ. Tracks like "Murder City Mayhem" and standout "Wall of Grey" reflect on the bleakness of living in Detroit, but the group choose to blast through the malaise rather than get mired in it. "South Shore Train" is a detour into hazy, swaying pub psychedelia, with a shout-along chorus and Mazzy Star-like guitars, but it's back to swaggering garage rock with "Selfish Little Queen." "God of Comedy" is Vulgar at his most storming and triumphant, wailing at full throttle and unleashing a diabolical guitar solo. On the finale "Misunderstood," the group proudly declare themselves outcasts, ensuring the world that they will never change. Going by releases like Survival of the Fiendish, there's absolutely no reason for them to. ~ Paul Simpson
