On 1991's WE CAN'T DANCE, Genesis hit the ground running with its first studio record in five years. Long past the theatrical prog-rock of the Gabriel years, the trio of Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford had made the transition to MTV icons whose material was skewering toward a definitive baby-boomer audience. Despite the five-year layoff, Genesis managed to spin off five top-30 singles that dealt with the kinds of adult topics that usually don't wind up on normally youth-driven pop charts. Some of the subject matter dealt with on these hits includes the hypocrisy of televangelists ("Jesus He Knows Me"), acidic parent-child relationships ("No Son of Mine"), and the disintegration of long-time relationships ("Never a Time"). Other topics dealt with on WE CAN'T DANCE include the unskilled workers who built England's railways in the 19th century ("Driving the Last Spike") and the homeless ("Tell Me Why"). There's also a requisite ballad for the adult contemporary market, "Hold on My Heart."

1967年に英国で産声を上げ、70年代には叙情的でありながらシアトリカルなプログレッシヴ・ロック・バンドとして非常に高い人気を誇り、その後80年代にはポップスの要素を大きく打ち出しながら世界的な人気を誇るバンドとして音楽シーンの頂点へと昇り詰めていった、英国ロック・バンドの代表格であり、五大プログレッシヴ・ロック・バンドの一つとしても賞賛を受ける存在、それがこのジェネシスだ。

英国プログレッシヴ・ロック黄金期の一翼を担うバンドとしてプログ・ロック・ファンから非常に大きな評価を受け、その後ポップな音楽性を羽ばたかせ、チャートの上位に楽曲を送り込みながら幅広い音楽ファンの心をつかんでいった彼らは、非常に個性的な軌跡を歩んできた稀有の存在だといえるだろう。初代ヴォーカリストであり最高のカリスマ、ピーター・ガブリエル在籍期となる初期ジェネシス、ピーター・ガブリエル脱退後にフィル・コリンズがヴォーカルを兼任する形で活動をつづけた中期ジェネシス、そして70年代後半に3人態勢となり、よりポップスの要素を持ち込みながらチャートをにぎやかす世界的ロック・バンドとなった後期ジェネシス…、ラインナップの変更とともにその音楽性も変化させながら常に第一線を走り続けた彼らは、キャリアを通して15枚のスタジオ・アルバムや6枚のライヴ・アルバム、数多くのコンピレーション・アルバムなどをリリースし、実に1億枚以上の世界累計アルバム・セールスを記録、2010年にはロックの殿堂入りも果たす、まさにレジェンドの名にふさわしい存在だ。

2024年はじめ、彼らのスタジオ・アルバム14作品が新装ソフトパック仕様のCDとなって一挙リリースされたのだが、今回、新装版CDと同じラインナップとなる、音楽史に深くその名を刻み込むジェネシスが1970年から1997年の間に発表してきた14枚のスタジオ・アルバムが、それぞれ180グラム重量盤アナログとなって登場することとなった。また、今回のアナログ盤にはニック・デイヴィスによる2007年リマスター音源が採用されている。

前作『INVISIBLE TOUCH』で80年代を代表する最高級アルバムを発表したジェネシス。以降再びソロ活動を行い、フィル・コリンズや元メンバーであるピーター・ガブリエルなど全英チャートをにぎわしていたアーティストが在籍する/していたバンドとして、世界的スーパーグループとして絶大な人気を博していた彼らが、前作から約5年振りに発表した通算14作目のスタジオ・アルバムが、この『WE CAN'T DANCE』だ。『DUKE』から『INVISIBLE TOUCH』まで大胆なポップス路線を推し進めてきた彼らだが、今作ではかつてのプログレッシヴ・ロック・テイストを再びサウンドに持ち込み、円熟味のある素晴らしい内容と、発表するシングルすべてをチャートに送り込むなど、90年代に入ってもその絶大な人気ぶりをシーンに見せつけてくれていたのだが、このアルバムを最後にフィル・コリンズがバンドを脱退、ジェネシスの絶頂期に幕を下ろす作品となってしまった。ニック・デイヴィスとジェネシスの共同プロデュースという形でレコーディングが行われた今作は、5作連続の全英チャートNo. 1を獲得した他、全米チャート8位、そして日本のアルバム・チャートでも8位を記録するなど、世界中で大きなチャート・アクションを記録した。

After spending the 1980s moving in an increasingly pop-friendly direction, 1991's We Can't Dance marked a return to earlier aesthetics for Genesis. Edgier with more prominent guitars and live drums than on Invisible Touch, the record was the band's strongest musical statement in over a decade. With "Driving the Last Spike" and the dark "Dreaming While You Sleep" the group revisited one of their forgotten strengths, telling extended stories. That's not to say the album is a return to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway or Trick of the Tail. Indeed, while there are several extended pieces on the record, there is none of the eccentricities, odd meters, or extended virtuoso solos of the band's progressive heyday. The album's closer, "Fading Lights," comes the closest, featuring an outstanding instrumental mid-section. Unfortunately, the record also contains some gutless ballads and paeans for world understanding that sound miles away from any immediacy. However, the surprisingly gritty singles "No Son of Mine," "Jesus He Knows Me," and "I Can't Dance" help make up for the album's weaker moments. ~ Geoff Orens
