Dead Rider's brand of precision-crafted aural chaos, which fuses a funk band's sense of groove, a prog rocker's willingness to embrace a freakish time signature, and a noise artist's love of creatively applied cacophony, is unique enough that it's hard to imagine finding acceptable collaborators would be an easy task. But apparently nothing is impossible in Dead Rider's universe, and for their fifth album, they've teamed up with one Paul Williams (not the guy who wrote "We've Only Just Begun"), who spouts Dada-style poetry in a rich but bitter British accent while the musicians explore the musical universe of their own creation. 2018's The Dead Rider Trio Featuring Mr. Paul Williams features a more musically concise version of Dead Rider than we've heard in the past, featuring just Todd Rittman on guitar, Matt Espy on percussion, and White Christmas on bass and keys. Dead Rider may seem more streamlined as a trio, but that doesn't feel like a drawback on these sessions, with Rittman rising to the challenge with volleys of visionary guitar skronk while Christmas and Espy lock down potent grooves that you could dance to if you weren't thrown off by the volleys of noise exploding overhead. And whoever Mr. Williams is, he's an inspired match for Dead Rider; a bit like a version of Mark E. Smith with a smoother voice and a more refined ability to articulate his annoyance, Williams isn't much on coherent narratives, but he's a ranter with the ability to be subtle and rancorous at the same time, and the flow of his delivery suits the roiling musical sea beneath him. The Dead Rider Trio Featuring Mr. Paul Williams is the sort of album that will either drive you up the wall or draw you into its web of articulate unpredictability, but at the very least it's never boring -- give this half a chance and you might find yourself falling into its truly distinct orbit. ~ Mark Deming
