Includes liner notes by Jimmy Giuffre and Gary Kramer. Reed player Jimmy Giuffre first debuted the Jimmy Giuffre 3 in 1956. This first configuration was a bit more conventional than what it would shortly become. Guitarist Jim Hall adds an elegance that at times feels folkish, and at other times like Bill Evan's classical piano leanings. Though the Jimmy Giuffre 3 lacked a drummer, the bass playing of either Ralph Pena or Jim Atlas anchors the trio. THE JIMMY GIUFFRE 3 is made up primarily of Giuffre originals, but several covers also grace the set, including a jubilant take of "The Song Is You" and a wistful "Crazy She Calls Me." This is a quiet yet riveting album that seamlessly blends tradition with gently forceful modernism.
