One of the best developments in the Duke Spirit's career is Liela Moss' growth into a powerful yet nuanced singer. During the band's early years, her fire-breathing vocals were instantly compelling, but over time she proved just as capable on more reflective later work like 2016's Kin and the following year's Sky Is Mine. During the Duke Spirit's hiatus following these back-to-back albums, Moss remained busy, and on her first solo album, Your Name Is Safe in My Mouth, she delves deeper into lush, pensive ballads. Recorded at her Somerset, England home with her Duke Spirit bandmate and partner Toby Butler, the album takes inspiration from sources ranging from Massive Attack to Emmylou Harris, but establishes a more consistent mood and sound than any of her previous work. She sets My Name Is Safe in Your Mouth's somber, tender atmosphere with "Memories and Faces," on which a gentle piano provides all the adornment her voice needs. Similarly, her singing warms up the wintry keyboards on "Into the Flesh," while the string arrangements on "Subequal," "Above You, Around You," and "Wild as Fire" echo the richness of her vocals. At times, the mood borders on too consistent, but the commanding beauty of Moss' instrument overrides the album's slower spots. At its best, My Name Is Safe in Your Mouth is a hauntingly lovely reintroduction to an underrated talent. ~ Heather Phares
