Recorded live in 1972. Considering George Benson was working in Jack McDuff's organ combo by 1962 and releasing his own albums as a leader by 1965, calling this 1972 performance his "early years" is a bit of a stretch. But if "early years" means when a Benson concert was still purely a jazz quartet gig of standards played by the most ferocious straight-ahead descendant of Wes Montgomery, then these are they. Benson's in a take-no-prisoners mood at this show, recorded at the Casa Caribe Club in New Jersey with a top-notch band; even "This Masquerade," the one vocal track (before it became Benson's calling card to the pop world) has some tough, muscular playing on it. However, all these cuts have been severely edited; for those who prefer to hear Benson and band's whole performance, this concert material is available in its entirety on GEORGE BENSON QUINTET - PAR EXCELLENCE.

This particular disc contains highlights from a San Francisco concert, and there are some very nice moments on the album.
