WORLD OUTSIDE is the sixth and final Psychedelic Furs album. Produced with Stephen Street (who had worked with them on their hit single "All That Money Wants" a few years earlier), the album shows the Furs returning to the more stripped-down sound of their earlier material and stepping a little further away from the mainstream. Though the album opener, "Valentine," seems a bit phoned in, WORLD OUTSIDE contains some of the best Furs material in years.
"In My Head" features some of John Ashton's most memorable ringing guitar work. "Until She Comes" highlights a beautiful acoustic guitar, offset by the distant thunder of Don Yallech's drums and some understated strings. "Don't Be a Girl" introduces a funky bass to the Furs sound. "Get a Room" is simply one of the best Furs songs since MIRROR MOVES. And, hovering over everything, there is Richard Butler's distinctive voice. Cracking, gravelly, and cigarette-scarred, it is, and always was, the heart and soul of the Psychedelic Furs. Though they never officially broke up, after the release of recording of WORLD OUTSIDE, the Furs ceased to be. As an epitaph, this album is a nearly perfect conclusion to a remarkable career.
