An integral player in Brazil1s Tropicalia movement of the late 1960s and '70s, Gal Costa worked alongside Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, and others to change the face of Brazilian music. Costa1s self-titled 1969 release pushed boundaries with its genre-splicing and psychedelic flourishes (outpacing even Veloso and Gil for outrageousness), but 19701s LEGAL found her streamlining her sound a bit, and leaning toward greater accessibility. This is not to say that LEGAL doesn't brim with invention. Latin rhythms burble through a stylistic tapestry of jazz, soul, blues, and rock, while Costa1s pretty voice holds it all together like glue. Surprising and beautiful, the album earns a deserved place in any respectable Tropicalia collection.
