This is part of Verve's Verve By Request series.
This little bossa nova gem, resurrected courtesy of Verve's superb By Request series, makes the case for Marcos Valle--composer of "Summer Samba" and "Crickets Sing For Anamaria"--as a forgotten hero of Brazilian music. The performances here are actually a series of duets between Valle and his wife Anamaria, and are mostly in English. Skillful singers both, the couple manage the transition with confidence and charm, avoiding the linguistic awkwardness that afflicts songs in translation. Though Anamaria can sound uncannily like Astrud Gilberto, she has a brighter sound and is a little more certain of herself. Valle's songs, mostly unfamiliar with the exception of "Summer Samba" and "Crickets," sound startlingly fresh after 30 years of out-of-print obscurity. Reissuing classic pop like this is no act of '60s kitsch nostalgia but a musical service to romantics everywhere.
