Gaika's debut album builds on the sound of his previous mixtapes and EPs, constructing harrowing soundscapes from elements of dancehall, grime, industrial, and trap. While the songs on Basic Volume explore similar sounds and themes as his previous work, they're sharper and more focused. His weary, heavy voice croaks out bitter lyrics about feeling oppressed and broken, particularly as a black man in England, in addition to reflecting on the loss of his father. References to war and Lord of the Flies abound, describing London as a ruthless battleground on songs like "Crown & Key." As bleak and suffocating as the album seems, there are some strong, hopeful moments. "Immigrant Sons (Pesos & Gas)" encourages the youth to rebel, and the closing "Spectacular Anthem" offers the assurance that "It's OK to love." ~ Paul Simpson
