This early 1960s recording features the Nigerian musician Solomon Ilori accompanied by an all-star band that includes trumpeter Donald Byrd, saxophonist/flautist Hubert Laws, and drummer Elvin Jones. The percolating, percussion-heavy set recalls similar African-influenced pieces by Sun Ra and his Arkestra, while Ilion's atmospheric vocals and pennywhistle playing belie the fact that the set was recorded in New Jersey, and the interplay between the session's various drummers makes it plain that they're having the time of their lives.
