During her 2017 tour, Nadler wrote numerous songs about the tension in relationships when distance is an issue. In her trademark pseudo-Southern gothic drawl, Nadler glissades between octaves as cellist Janel Leppin's gorgeous strings unfurl." Clash - "The album opens with a self-titled murder ballad. As the song builds Nadler's story of an execution is backed with delicate guitars, ethereal strings, siren vocal wails and eerie atmospherics." Paste - "Nadler's vocals are at once soft and steely on lyrics with a poetic, sometimes gothic streak. It's a very intentional, stylized approach, which makes her flashes of wit all the more startling."
