As a protege of dub innovator King Tubby, Scientist honed his craft in the mid-'70s, developing a skeletal, bass-heavy remix style of his own. As the tides in Jamaican music shifted away from dub-friendly roots reggae and toward dancehall by the end of the '70s, Scientist kept up with the times, applying his signature sounds to increasingly busier, beefier productions. At the Controls of Dub: Rare Dubs 1979-1980 focuses on Scientist in a phase just before digital technology largely took over the dub landscape, spreading out his adventurous sound effects and bouncing delays over 14 tracks. ~ Fred Thomas

科学者のタフダブ集。伝説キング・タビーやチャネル・ワンのフーキム兄弟との活動も有名な至宝ダブ・エンジニア:サイエンティスト。本作は、70年代後半から80年代前半のタフなレアトラックをコンパイルした作品。タビーの弟子となりドロミリー・アベニュー・スタジオでの数多くのセッションを過ごしノウハウを学び、キング・ジャミー(当時プリンス・ジャミー)の代替でのエンジニア業が評価され活動が始まった"科学者"の初期のレア音源集。無駄を省いたスカスカのミキシング・スタイルは、当時のダンスホール・レゲエともマッチ。トリスタン・パーマーなど当時のヒット曲のダブ・バージョンも収録。ええやんええやん。
