Far from crass, or even anything vaguely brutish, The Vulgar Boatmen are a tiny treasure in a sea of pop star wannabes and trend-jumpers. They are unlikely assortment of characters to be sure. The heart of the group, songwriting team Dale Lawrence and Robert Ray collaborate from different and distant states. Ray, a Florida based English professor worked out the albums tunes via the U.S. postal service with Lawrence, an Indianapolis songwriter. The two worked out their material with their respective bands, essentially two versions of The Boatmen. That they were able to complete a cohesive album is surprising. That they made an album of organic pop gems is miraculous.
YOU AND YOUR SISTER lopes along with an easy, offhand grace as if unpretentious pop songs could just plop into anybody's lap. The highlights are many, the winsome "Drive Somewhere" and "Margaret Says" are but two that roll the unaffected charm of Buddy Holly out of the history books and into the living room. True to Holly's legacy, the Boatmen are subdued in their elegance and casual in their mastery.
