After more than a decade apart, these three founding Byrds reconvened at the end of the '70s. The set's point of comparison is less the classic early Byrds, and more like the bands that followed in their wake. While it doesn't embrace the 12-string jangle of these ex-Byrds' electric origins, this is an album of consummate craftsmanship. Even on a slow day Gene Clark is a writer to be reckoned with. His four entries here include the simple but eloquent "Little Mama" and the tropical flavored "Feelin' Higher"--both songs handily exceed the low expectations their titles may suggest. Elsewhere, Chris Hillman hands in some finely written numbers squarely in the realm of '70s country-rock. "Sad Boy" manages to be both rocking and pretty in a way that avoids the over-polishing favored by The Eagles. Roger McGuinn's unmistakable voice is heard on his few entries. Three demos round out the set, including the otherwise unrepresented "Little Girl" and "I Love Her."
