ジャズの黄金時代、白人写真家のウィリアム・クラクストンが残したジャズメン達の貴重な写真をジャケットに使用したCDが登場。カバー写真は1960年ニューポート・ジャズ・フェスティバルのステージで撮影された1枚。1958年にベツレヘムレーベルから発売されたニーナ・シモンの初スタジオ録音アルバム。チェット・ベイカー・グループのベーシスト、ジミー・ボンド、ヒース兄弟のドラマー、アル・ヒースのシンプルな編成でニーナがボーカル、ピアノを披露している。『Little Girl Blue』からの音源。同メンバーで1959年NYのタウンホールで録音された音源を5曲追加。

This budget-priced compilation issued via Verve's Jazz Club imprint spotlights Nina Simone's mid-'60s stint with the Philips label, the creative tipping point of the singer's storied career. Expanding the grammar of jazz by introducing elements of folk, soul, and pop, at Philips Simone redefined both her music and her place in music, making forever obsolete the stereotypes that long straitjacketed the role of women in American popular art.
